BENDIGO business leaders are calling on the community to get behind the upcoming Support Small Business Day.
The Victorian Government initiative boasts the slogan ‘Shop Big in Small Business’ and offers retailers, cafes, restaurants and service providers to celebrate with one-day events and special promotions on October 19.
Bendigo Traders Association president Ross White and Bendigo Business Council executive officer Patrick Falconer are throwing their support behind the event.
“It’s a fantastic idea,” Mr White said.
“We should encourage more things like this.
“It’s a great initiative from the government and there should be more of it.”
A host of Bendigo businesses have already registered for the event with details available online at www.supportsmallbusinessday.com.au.
Pledge backing for Support Our Small Business Day
The Support Small Business Day is a Victorian Government initiative being supported by the National Australia Bank.
NAB is offering $100,000 worth of shopper incentives, including more than 4000 NAB Support Small Business Day Gift Cards redeemable at participating businesses on the day.
“I think our small business owners will be more than happy to grasp it and take it with two hands,” Mr White said.
“If the government’s willing to back it we should get behind them and support them.
“If it’s successful then we might do it again.”
Mr White said retail trade had improved in the past month but there was still a long way to go.
“Things like this will help a hell of a lot because any good news is welcome,” he said.
“It’s a positive step forward.”
Mr Falconer from the Bendigo Business Council said the initiative was fantastic.
“Hopefully it will bring not only people in from Bendigo but also from surrounding areas," he said.
"And hopefully the retailers will get behind the event and have specials and certain things available on that day.”
