CITY of Greater Bendigo council is in negotiations to purchase the oval of the former Golden Square Secondary College from the Department of Education.
The State Government wants to rezone the school as a residential zone but the council is hopeful of buying the oval to keep using it as a sports ground for football and cricket.
"We are currently in discussions to purchase that land and hope to come to an agreement in two to three months," City of Greater Bendigo manager of active and healthy communities Pat Jess said.
"We want to utilise the site for junior sport matches.
"We are waiting on the outcome of an evaluation and once we get that information we will have a better idea on how to move forward.
Mr Jess said the oval is currently used by the Bendigo District Cricket Association for junior matches.
A spokesman for the Department of Education said while the school was being rezoned the intention is still use the oval for its intended use.
"The Department recently met with Bendigo Council about the Council’s interest in purchasing the cricket ground on the former Bendigo South East Secondary College (Golden Square campus) site," the spokesman said.
"The process currently under way to rezone the entire former school site to residential use would not prevent the Council from purchasing the cricket ground and continuing to use it for sporting purposes."
