EIGHT emerging and established swim stars of the Bendigo Hawks Aquatic Swim Club will take up the challenge of open water swimming when they represent their club at the 2013 Victorian Open Water Championships to be held this weekend.
Since the completion of the short course swimming season at the end of August, BHA head coach Ashley Wain has tailored the training program for his charges with the championship event in mind.
“Open water swimming presents a unique and exciting challenge," Wain said this week.
"I expect this group of swimmers to really benefit from the experience."
The championships, which will be held at the Hazelwood Pondage near Morwell, include 5km and 10km Age and Open championship events.
There will also be 1km and 1.5 km non-championship events.
BHA will be represented in the 10km championship event by the club’s newly-appointed assistant coach Kahlia Marsh.
The race will be Marsh’s first outing in the blue and yellow cap of the Hawks since joining the club last month.
Her exhausting weekend program will also include a swim over the 5 km distance with her new teammates, Tyson Jelbart, Bailey Harriden and Angus Verbeek.
Amelia Beaton, Torsten Lau and Olivia Wright will swim the 2.5 km event.
Ziggy Lau will compete over the 1km distance.
