GARRY Lavars is a big believer in the old adage about the fish.
“Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime,” he said.
Mr Lavars, from Dunolly, is a valued member of the CFA community education group.
“I believe to make the community safer we must educate people so they have the tools to help themselves," he said.
“It makes people more self-reliant, competent and capable.
“By educating people about fire safety you are changing their attitudes to it.”
Mr Lavars said he enjoyed working in the group, where he has met lots of like-minded people.
“You are working with other volunteers who appreciate the value of educating the community," he said.
Mr Lavars has been a CFA volunteer for the past 31 years.
He has also been involved in many other community groups and committees over the years.
“I do it to be part of it and assist where I can with what skills I can offer,” he said.
“The best way I can make a contribution is by educating others.”
