Suns win round one BDCA thriller
STRATHDALE-Maristians began its Bendigo District Cricket Association premiership defence with a gripping two-wicket win over rivals Bendigo United on Saturday.
The Suns came back from the brink to win on the second-last ball of the one-day match, answering the Redbacks' 7-229 with 8-230 at Bell Oval.
In his debut first XI innings, the winning runs were hit by youngster Dylan Bailie off Redbacks' captain Leigh McDermott when he scored two off the fifth ball of the 45th over.
Not only have the Suns started the 2013-14 season with a win, but it keeps intact an unbeaten streak that has now reached 26 games.
Star all-rounder Ben DeAraugo produced a superb double for the Suns.
He took 4-32 off eight overs - including the key wicket of the Redbacks' Heath Behrens for a duck - before later scoring 56 off 47 balls.
Bendigo United's boom recruit Ben Gunn made a brilliant start for his new club.
Gunn scored the BDCA's first century of the season with his 110 off 109 balls, while also taking three wickets, plus inflicting a run-out.
Other winners were White Hills (6-203) over Huntly-North Epsom (137); Golden Square (4-192) against Kangaroo Flat (8-175); Eaglehawk (4-169) downed Sandhurst (7-168); and Strathfieldsaye (4-158) upset Bendigo (155).
