A NEW Epsom business is providing piece of mind for landowners, the elderly and their families.
Leigh and Alison Climas opened up Fire Alarm Essentials in July after noticing there was a lot of rental properties in Bendigo and an ageing population.
He thought there could be a need for a team to go into residential and rental properties and service smoke alarms.
The first few months of business have proved they were correct.
"We've been busy so far," Mr Climas said
“We come to the site, whether it be a residential or rental property, clean the smoke alarms, replace the batteries, do a sound level test and make sure the alarm is still in date.
"We also make sure they are up to Australian standard.
“It takes the burden off the person and provides peace of mind that this vital warning system is operating correctly.”
Fire Alarm Essentials also specialises in fire equipment maintenance, including fire extinguishers, fire blankets, carbon monoxide alarms and fire panels.
Mr Climas said the majority of his clients were elderly and couldn't get on a ladder to fix the smoke alarms themselves.
They also took on a contract with a local real estate agency recently.
“It takes away the duty of care for the landlords," he said.
“The landlords are responsible for the fire alarms in any house they own.
“There has been a couple of cases where landlords have been taken to court and sued.
“We take away that risk.”
Mr Climas has been in the fire industry for the past 12 years, servicing commercial fire equipment.
Mrs Climas is a former teacher and financial planner, who brings a business brain to the company.
"We believe people need to be better educated about their fire safety equipment and the servicing required to keep this equipment functioning efficiently," Mr Climas said.
"We’re a local, family-run company," Mr Climas said.
"We are just trying something different.
"We saw there was a need for this and business is going quite well."
