BENDIGO'S Jack Haig has hit the front in the Caterpillar Tour of Tasmania cycling classic.
Haig teamed with two other stars from Bendigo - Darren Lapthorne and Robbie Hucker - to dominate Tuesday's 103km trek from Hamilton to Lake St Clair.
A previous winner of the national road championship, Lapthorne is racing for Drapac and won the stage ahead of Haig, Huon Salmon-Genesys team, and Drapac's Hucker.
Going into Wednesday's racing, Haig is 1 minute and 48 seconds clear of Hucker, with Lapthorne at 3.05 and in third place on the leader board.
Wednesday's racing is a 94km battle from Launceston to Grindelwald.
The tour finale is Sunday's criterium in Devonport.
