THE catering ladies at Elmore’s field days have been volunteering for decades.
Volunteer Joan Giffin has been washing dishes at the field days ever since the first event 50 years ago.
"I love doing it because it helps the community," she said.
"It's a great get-together as well."
Friend Gwenda Ussing joked she was a relative newcomer to the catering hall-she'd only been in Elmore for 30 years.
Val Lester, 80, has been volunteering for over 25 years. She said she had been unsure if she would make it to this year’s event.
“I’ve got a really bad back so I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to attend.”
Catering marquee manager Joy Worme said they had a lot of food to prepare, but after 50 years they have perfected the technique.
“We use about 300 kgs of ham and chicken. Five hundred loaves of bread and about 600 bread rolls," she said.
"There’s a lot to prepare but after 50 years we know how to do it very well.
"It’s a well-oiled machine."
