BACKYARD pools are the focus of a new campaign looking at safety measures in the lead-up to summer.
Kidsafe Victoria has called for a renewed focus on pool safety after figures showed more than 20 children under the age of five drowned in backyard pools between 2011 and 2012.
More than a third of all drownings for that age group occurred in home pools, the figures show.
Kidsafe Victoria president Robert Caulfield said a large number of drownings were caused by faulty or sub-standard pool fencing.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said it was important the central Victorian community took particular care around pools.
Ms Edwards urged all people to review any safety measures before summer.
She said as well as regularly inspecting fences and safety aspects, people should also remember to focus on constant supervision of children around water.
