BETT BETT’S Helen Keene thinks it’s important to teach children safety messages when they’re young.
“They absorb information like little sponges,” she said.
Mrs Keene and husband Allan have been communications officers with the Dunolly Fire Brigade for the past seven years.
Mrs Keene is also involved with the CFA community education group, which imparts important safety messages to children at organised field days and schools.
The group also get their message out through holding stalls at shopping centres, Bunnings, farmers’ markets and events like the Elmore Field Days.
“We do a fair bit of cross-community work,” Mrs Keene said.
She joined the community education group after they put out a call for new members.
“I looked into it and thought it’d be good to teach these important safety messages to children, so I took the course,” she said.
In her spare time, she loves to garden and “potter around the house”.
She said volunteering was a great social outlet for her and she loved meeting new people.
