Police are monitoring people's behaviour as people flock to bars and parties for the grand final.
Sergeant Rosie Rowe said officers would target drink driving and public order around licensed premises.
Members of the state highway patrol have already conducted breath tests on local drivers.
"We'll be out doing some testing and monitoring crowd behaviour in and around licensed premises this evening," Sergeant Rowe said.
"We expect people to have a good time and have parties at home.
"We're just wary that that can extend to bigger crowds in the CBD.
"We find the majority of people do the right thing.
"We urge people to resist the urge to get into their cars or overindulge and make their way into the CBD."
