BENDIGO'S John Lingard is hoping to take his musical dream one step further in this year's Telstra Road to Discovery competition.
Last year Lingard made the final of performance category but this year has been selected as a semi-finalist in the songwriting category.
"It's great news. I feel better about getting through to this part," he said.
Lingard submitted the songs online where they were judged on melody and arrangement.
"Between last year's competition and this year's I have just been writing. I've only played a couple of gigs," he said.
"One song called Enough is actually about the idea of would you still want me when I'm useless, old and have lost who I am."
Lingard flies to Canberra on Tuesday for a songwriting bootcamp and to perform at the Great Southern Blues Festival in Narooma as part of the competition against 17 other hopefuls.
Ten artists will progress to the finals competing in the final event which will be held in Melbourne on October 30.
But before then he is playing a set at Gold Mines Hotel on Saturday from 8pm.
He will also perform at the Rifle Brigade in November as a part of the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival.
