STRATHFIELDSAYE Cricket Club has lost three of its key players, but president Brent Yates says the departures won't break the Jets.
Former Jets' captain Ben Gunn, Tim Wood and Liam Smith all had their clearances to rival Bendigo District Cricket Association clubs granted on Wednesday night.
Gunn, who has been the Jets' captain the past two years and is one of the elite batsmen of the BDCA, is headed to Bendigo United, while Wood and Smith are joining Golden Square.
"If you see those three names out, you would probably be thinking it's going to be a disaster for the club," Yates said on Thursday.
"It's disappointing to lose those calibre of players, but overall, we've got a lot of positive things happening at the club that will bring us success in time."
With Gunn leaving, veteran Greg Lyon will once again take on the Jets' captaincy duties - a role he last filled in the 2008-09 season.
The Jets have landed a coup with the experienced Shannon Waters - a member of Golden Square's 2008-09 premiership team - joining the club as bowling coach.
The recently-retired Adam Hargreaves has been appointed batting coach, while Josh Di Camillo remains on as senior coach.
"Probably the biggest thing out of what has happened is that while losing those players will present challenges at the first XI level, I've always looked at challenges bringing opportunity," Yates said.
"We're in a position where we've got a lot of players who will be given the opportunity to play in the first XI. We'll provide that opportunity, the challenge is how will they step up?"
Yates said the decision to appeal the three clearances was made to stand up for the club.
"We achieved last night a few things we wanted to, and that's why we went through the appeal process," Yates said.
"So even though the clearances didn't go in our favour, we wanted to stand up for the club."
Gunn, Smith and Wood have spent the past five years with the Jets.
Gunn made 2016 runs and took 41 wickets; Wood scored 1729 runs; while Smith made 893 runs and took 59 wickets with his spinners.
The BDCA season starts October 5.
