LUKE Owens has been recognised for his charity work with a state-wide award.
The 20-year-old received the 2013 Pride of Australia Medal in the Young Leader category on Wednesday.
Mr Owens, a Bendigo for Homeless Youth co-founder, said he was honoured.
“It’s a tremendous honour,” he said.
“It’s a bit of individual recognition but it was also a team effort on behalf of the Bendigo community.
“It has just really inspired me to pursue bigger and better things in the future.”
Mr Owens said he had not been told why he won the award.
“I guess it was just the fact that I’d deferred my university course and put my life on hold to make a difference,” he said.
“The award was aimed at anyone 25 or under who had advanced their community through their personal endeavours.
“The whole journey over the last two years has been a community effort and I’m just happy to be a spokesperson for the cause.” Mr Owens is now in the running for a national award.
