CONSTRUCTION on the long-awaited Mitchell Street redevelopment will start at the end of the month.
Preliminary work will begin on Sunday, September 29 and construction will begin the following week.
The first stage of construction involves working on the section of road between Pall Mall to Hargreaves Mall and includes:
- Removing the median island between Pall Mall and Hargreaves Street;
- Replacing the existing drain pipe on both sides of Mitchell St;
- Replacing the curb on both sides of Mitchell St; and
- Replacing the footpaths on both sides of Mitchell St.
Buses coming from Pall Mall will temporarily pick up and drop off passengers near Chemist Warehouse.
The City of Greater Bendigo employee overseeing the $3.8 million project will set up an office at 34 Mitchell St.
Residents, local traders and public transport users will be able to meet the project manager, view the plans and get updates on the project at the shop.
The council will also send out a weekly email with details of the types of impact they can expect week-to-week.
Council presentation and assets director Darren Fuzzard said the council had consulted with local traders extensively to try and limit the impact on their business.
"There will be disruption. It’s impossible to avoid," he said.
"We are working hard to minimise it though."
Construction will cease from December 1 to January 27 and around Easter on the request of traders.
The council said they would always ensure shops were accessible.
"Multiple crews will be used to ensure that a continuous flow of work occurs and disruptions to individual shops are minimised during normal working hours.
"We will generally be operating on a six-day working week and will also use Sundays when the work we are doing is likely to cause significant disruptions."
The move to upgrade one of Bendigo’s main thoroughfares to improve congestion problems began five years ago.
