BENDIGO Canoe Club paddlers Kristy Packham and Sean Jones powered their way to state title wins at the Victorian Downriver Classic event on Sunday.
Packham, a national kayaking champion and Australian representative, took first place in the ladies' open division after navigating the technical, physically challenging course on the Yarra River near Warrandyte.
Young star Jones claimed gold in the under-14 men's category, following on from his victory in the Victorian Marathon Championship the previous weekend.
The pair were among five club members to compete at the event - all of whom brought home a medal.
Ben McLean paddled to silver in the under-18 men's division, while Leigh Murphy finished third in the men's open class.
Navigating in her first downriver race, teenager Madeline Jones secured a bronze medal in the women's under-16 event.
She was praised for taking on such a challenging course for her downriver debut.
Bendigo Canoe Club president Andrew Morrall said scoring five medals from five athletes was a noteworthy achievement.
"Once again our club has proven that it's a force to be reckoned with, not only on the flat but the rapids, too," Morrall said.
"The Yarra River was very low, which meant that the course was very technical.
"While you would expect a few dings paddling in rapids, all boats came home with some extra stripes."
The club is based at Lake Weeroona and welcomes inquiries. For more information, email BCC@live.com
