A $3.8 million redevelopment of Mitchell Street is set to begin before the end of the month.
The removal of trees and a temporary relocation of three bus stops between Dymocks and Sussans will occur on September 29 with construction to begin the following week.
Access to shops is expected to be maintained.
City of Greater Bendigo mayor Lisa Ruffell said the project would improve one of the city’s biggest roads.
“Mitchell Street is worn out and in desperate need of a complete road re-construction between Pall Mall and Queen Street,” she said.
“The road pavement will be completely re-built, new underground drainage and services installed and footpaths widened where possible, paved and reconstructed.”
Presentation and Assets Director Darren Fuzzard said the streetscape works have been divided into three sections to limit the extent of shops directly impacted at any one time.
The three sections are, first Pall Mall to Hargreaves Street; second is the Hargreaves / Mitchell Street intersection and finally Hargreaves Street to Queen Street will be redeveloped.
