A teenage girl has described the hell she has endured at the hands of a stepfather who destroyed her sense of security and safety.
The victim, now aged 19, was present in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday as her stepfather was sentenced to prison.
In an unconventional move, the teen requested her victim impact statement be read to the court.
It detailed the anxiety and depression that has turned her life upside down.
“Since the crimes my life has changed dramatically, all in negative ways,” her statement said.
“I struggle to sleep at night and have graphic dreams about (the offender)… It has made me feel like I’m living in hell.”
The girl was filmed in her bed and in her shower by her stepfather who secretly made videos of her through a hidden surveillance camera.
The statement described the horror that has made her everyday life a frightening reminder of the violation of the offences.
“Every night I still suffer anxiety looking at the air conditioning vent,” she said.
“I don’t feel comfortable going into my own house. I refuse to shower in my bathroom… I don’t feel like I will ever let a male get close to me again after the crimes. I feel violated and insecure.”
The young victim was supported by a large group of family and friends in the public gallery.
