Bella is the most popular name for both our favourite furry friends according to records from the City of Greater Bendigo.
The Bendigo Advertiser obtained data of pet names kept during the 2012-2013 period of registration.
Molly was the second most popular name for dogs and Tiger for cats.
Rounding out the top five for dogs and cats were Jack and Smokey respectively.
Manager of animal services Neville Zimmer said there were approximately 19,000 dogs and 6000 cats registered in the City of Greater Bendigo.
He said it was compulsory for owners with pets more than three months of age to be registered with their councils.
"We use the fee to fund a lost and found service, to deal with nuisance animals, dangerous menacing restricted breed programs and education programs," he said.
"If you are caught with an unregistered dog there is a $289 fine.”
Mr Zimmer said it was important for owners to make sure their pets were microchipped.
"It is a permanent form of identification for pets and is linked to a national database," he said.
"It is nearly a guarantee if your dog or cat goes missing you'll get it returned.
"There are lots of good stories out there of pets who have been picked up by rangers hundreds of kilometres away and returned to their owners."
