The garden of central Victorian native plants will be set up at the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-op site in Prouses Road.

Dja Dja Wurrung Enterprises chairman Rodney Carter said food plants were important to the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

“Most species that we utilise traditionally are now threatened and protected. 

“There are also different types of orchids and lilys we’d like to use in the garden. 

“We hope this adds to the knowledge of this area.” 

Member elect Lisa Chesters said the garden would celebrate Aboriginal history and culture.

“This organisation is doing so much for its people in central Victoria. They will be able to cultivate and grow national species which tell their story.”

Ms Chesters said the garden also offered a chance to educate non-Aboriginal people about Aboriginal culture.

“It is an opportunity for local Aboriginal people to share their stories and educate Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people about the native species of this region.”
