ONE in 10 Bendigo residents have already cast their votes ahead of Saturday’s election.
According to Australian Electoral Commission Bendigo divisional returning officer Terry Holmes, about 11,000 people had cast pre-poll votes by close of business on Wednesday.
“At times the lines have been 30 metres outside the office,” he said.
“(Pre-poll voting) seems to be developing.
“It’s a voting trend that seems to be evolving.”
Mr Holmes said he expected about 14,000 people would have lodged pre-poll votes at the Hargreaves office by 6pm on Friday.
“At the last election in 2010 it levelled out at about 8000,” he said. “In the state election some months later there was 14,000.
“It will likely get close to 14,000 or even go above. We just need some rain; it keeps people away.”
The Hargreaves Street AEC office is open from 8.30am to 6pm today.
Mr Holmes said office would only be open to interstate voters on Saturday.
There were 101,101 people registered in the seat of Bendigo on July 31 and about 14.5 million across Australia, according to the AEC. For a full list of voting booths, visit the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au
