VETERANS from the Malaya and Borneo emergencies and their families commemorated the conflicts at a service on Saturday.
It is the second year the Bendigo chapter of the National Malaya and Borneo Veterans Association had held a service at the Bendigo RSL. About eight veterans were present.
President Peter Dodd served in Malaya from 1957 to 1958.
“Last year the veterans said they really appreciate being recognised for their service in these lesser-known conflicts,” he said.
Current serving soldier Glenn (last name not given for confidentiality reasons) was the special guest speaker at the event.
His speech reflected on past conflicts and the important role of veterans’ families.
“This conflict is often overlooked and we must remember the sacrifice people made,” he said.
“About 23 soldiers died in Indonesia and 39 in Malaya.
“I also wanted to mention the families. They are the mechanism which look after everything that goes on at home. That’s not just in this conflict, it’s for every serving member.”
