CATHOLIC College Bendigo’s netball teams won gold and silver at Monday’s finals of the School Sport Victoria championships.
This year’s titles drew more than 400 teams from across the state.
CCB won the year 8 final and was runner-up in year 7.
Their journey to the state championships began by winning the Sandhurst Division finals in Bendigo and then Loddon Mallee Region play-offs in Echuca.
In Monday’s finals, CCB played three pool games.
The year 8 team beat Maribyrnong Sports Academy, 22-19; La Valla Catholic College, 24-20; and Rowville Secondary College, 26-14.
A 24-14 win against Frankston High School in the semi-final put CCB into the titles decider.
“It was a satisfying moment when the girls took to the court for their Grand Final against Emmanuel College Warrnambool,” said CCB coach Nicole Mazzarella.
“They played a clean and competitive brand of netball.”
At the final whistle, CCB led 20-9.
“The girls have a lot to be proud of,” Mazzarella said.
“Not only have they gone through this entire season undefeated, they demonstrate terrific sportsmanship and respect for each other and their opponents.”
The year 7 team from CCB won three great contests in their pool at the state titles.
Play began with a 20-19 win against Maribyrnong Sports Academy, and was followed by a 21-14 victory against La Valla Catholic College Traralgon, and a 20-14 result against Rowville Secondary College.
CCB scored a 17-13 victory in the semi-final clash with Melbourne Girls College.
A talented line-up from Mentone Girls Secondary College went on to score a 22-14 victory against CCB in the year 7 girls’ grand final.
