THE future of Brown Sugar’s Bendigo store isn’t clear.
The clothing store in Killian’s Walk did not open for business yesterday and according to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission administrators were appointed earlier in the year.
Bendigo store manager Hayley Kennedy said Brown Sugar had not gone into administration yet but expected that to change in coming days.
She said potential partners from Melbourne and overseas had decided not to work with Brown Sugar forcing the store to close.
Mrs Kennedy said there was a slim chance Brown Sugar Bendigo employees wouldn’t lose their jobs.
“It is unclear,” she said.
“If someone steps in and they say they love the reputation of Brown Sugar and want to be a part of it there could be a chance to stay.
“I love Brown Sugar and would come back in a heartbeat, but we are in limbo.” Despite the uncertainty, Mrs Kennedy wanted to thank customers, employees and fellow retailers in the Bendigo CBD for their ongoing support throughout the six years the store was open. Mrs Kennedy is a committee member of the Bendigo Traders Association and urged retailers not to walk away from the CBD.
