BENDIGO police and the Bendigo Sheriff’s Office detected 34 offences and $170,000 in outstanding fines in an automatic number plate recognition operation on Wednesday.
Police set up on High Street in Kangaroo Flat between 8.30am and 1pm.
They scanned 4700 cars and breath tested about 340 drivers.
They picked up 13 unregistered cars, eight unroadworthy cars, six unlicensed drivers and four suspended drivers.
They also handed out several tickets for failing to carry a licence and failing to display P-plates.
Bendigo police Senior Constable Dale Andrews described it as an “extremely successful operation”.
“Roughly 1.5 per cent of total vehicles were cars which shouldn’t be on the road.
“We also found over $170,000 in outstanding fines.
“Of that, 457 warrants were detected and 78 defendants were processed.”
