POLICE have condemned the actions of a man who drove for 30 kilometres on an exposed rim after he blew a tyre at Goornong yesterday as risky and stupid.
The 55-year-old Strathfieldsaye man’s excuse for driving from near the intersection of the Goornong-Fosterville Road and Midland Highway to Kennington Reservoir with a blown tyre was “we do dumb things sometimes”.
His joyride left marks in the road surface.
Acting Senior Sergeant Damian Keegan said the man’s actions were dangerous.
“Driving on a rim limits the amount of control the person has on the vehicle,” he said.
“This type of action not only causes damage to roadways but it is risky for the driver and other people utilising the road.”
A witness who did not want to be named said she first saw the car driving erratically at Goornong towards Bendigo.
“He was doing 80 kilometres an hour. When he was going around the corner, he went right off the side of the road. He was gripping onto the steering wheel so tightly trying to keep control of the car.
“There were sparks and rocks flying at me as I drove behind him. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
Later, the woman drove past Kennington Reservoir and saw the offending car parked. She followed marks in the road to find a blown tyre near Goornong-Fosterville Road.
The woman notified police, who handed the man a $361 fine for using an unsafe vehicle and issued him with a notice of unroadworthiness.
