BENDIGO East clubmates Rebecca Holmes and Kate Jordan will pit their skills against many of the country’s best swimmers this weekend.
The talented teenagers are bound for Sydney to contest the Australian open short-course championships.
The three-day meet starts tomorrow.
Although it’s a short-course meet, racing in a 25m pool, the swimmers have taken no shortcuts in their preparation.
The build-up included last weekend’s Victoria Country short-course titles at Wangaratta’s indoor aquatic centre.
Holmes, 17, will race in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
Personal bests are 1:04.25 and 27.10.
“Butterfly is the event I have been focused on more at training,” said Holmes.
She has taken four seconds off her butterfly time in less than 12 months.
“Our coaches Tony Rodda, Chris Geyer, John Jordan and Val Campbell do so much for all the squad.”
Holmes said a key factor in her improvement was the dry-land training.
“There’s been a lot more gym work and running which has really helped increase my aerobic fitness and upper body strength.”
Now in her seventh year of competitive swimming, Holmes first swam at Paul Sadler Swimland and Bendigo before moving to Bendigo East.
This weekend is the first time the year 12 student at Girton Grammar will have raced at the Australian open short-course titles.
It’s consecutive starts for Jordan at one of the country’s biggest meets.
The 15-year-old raced at last year’s titles in Western Australia.
Jordan will race the 50m breast-stroke in Sydney.
A goal is to beat her PB of 34.99.
“Improving in each swim is always the goal,” Jordan said.
The year 10 student at Bendigo South East Secondary College puts in many hours training each week.
“Training is always challenging and fun.You can gain a lot of life lessons through swimming,” said Jordan.
“Some training sessions can be a lot more difficult than others, but the main thing is to enjoy doing what you are doing.”
Another of East’s stars, Jacob Waller qualified for the meet but has decided to focus on the Victorian Age titles to be run the following weekend.
