THE Bendigo Gold was buoyed by progress in its fight for VFL survival on Thursday.
The Gold announced a new two-year corporate sponsorship with Universal Manufacturing.
And City of Greater Bendigo chief Craig Niemann said council is likely to state its position soon.
The Gold is seeking council support and access to a facility to run a commercial operation.
Niemann said council’s next meeting on September 11 is the earliest likely date for a decision.
“We’re still have conversations with Gold about facilites – and other users – but I expect that a formal decision won’t be made for a few weeks yet,” Niemann said.
Gold chairman Tim Dickson and coach Aussie Jones presented to council last Wednesday.
“I think there was strong interest from the council about the retention of a VFL licence, but that’s just not going to be at all costs,” Niemann said.
“We’ve got to weigh-up what the council itself can do to support the Gold and all other clubs and try to make sure that it’s fair for everyone.
“The mayor came out strongly and provided her support and wanted to be a ticketholder and that was great.
“The councillors have not got to the point of making a decision on it yet. I think they’re looking at a broader picture as to what support might be able to be provided.”
The council’s timeline suits the Gold “as long as we’ve got something before our deadline that’s commercially viable in place,” Dickson said.
The Gold will hand back its VFL licence if it can’t meet certain targets by September 27.
Those targets include signing-up 500 members for next season, securing a marked increase in financial support and gaining access to a facility.
Universal Manufacturing’s financial support is a boost, but the Gold’s future remains in doubt.
“It’s a good local Bendigo business, and for us it’s good that we are getting quality businesses coming on board,” Dickson said.
“It really still is a battle, we still need the support of people signing up as members, we need the support of businesses.”
