A CASTLEMAINE man is fighting for his life in hospital after his car smashed into a power pole Monday afternoon.
The 50-year-old man, the sole occupant, was travelling north along Duke Street in Castlemaine about 2.15pm when he lost control of the vehicle. “He lost control of the car and veered into a drainage ditch,” said Sergeant Peter Johnston, from Castlemaine police.
“The car has then become airborne and the driver’s side of the car has hit a power pole.”
Sergeant Johnston said the man was flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition, with serious head and arm injuries.
He said an investigation was being conducted into the cause of the incident.
“There were no other cars involved in the incident and at this stage there is nothing to suggest speed was an issue,” he said.
“We are not sure what could have caused him to lose control – it could have been anything.”
