The Prince of Wales Showgrounds is hosting the Annual Victorian Colourbration for the eighth year.
The three-day event celebrates Australian alpacas and the achievements of the emerging rural industry.
Breeders from across Australia and New Zealand will compete for Supreme Champion awards in the 16 natural alpaca colours including white, fawn, brown, black and rose grey.
Australian Alpaca Association Victorian central regional committee member Kevin Sleep said the Australian alpaca industry was only 25 years old but was growing rapidly.
“Anything you can do with wool, you can do with alpaca fleece.
“Meat production is starting as well. The meat product from them is between lamb and veal so it is tender and soft.”
Mr Sleep invited the community to come meet the personality-filled animals.
“The fleece is soft to touch.
“The animals are very easy to work with and each has their own personality.”
The show runs from today until Sunday at the Prince of Wales Showgrounds.
