Reigning premier Golden Square remains in the top three after defeating South Bendigo by 30 points at MyJet Oval today.
The Bulldogs extended their advantage at every break in their 12.10 (82) to 7.10 (52) victory.
Golden Square forced the Bloods to play catch-up football after kicking three of the first four goals of the match in the opening 15 minutes.
Centre half-forward James Bristow kicked four goals for the Bulldogs to be one of their best, while Josh Filo chipped in with three.
Golden Square skipper Simon Rosa returned to the field in the second half after limping off during the second term after copping a knock to his knee.
Golden Square's Jack Geary was best on ground, while Travis Baird was again outstanding down back. Nathan Bell and Rhys Bradley were also among the best for the reigning premiers.
Star Bloods' full-forward Justin Maddern was held to two goals by Golden Square defender Dale Young.
The Bloods named Marcus Varley, Daniel Frew - who the job on Rosa - Brad Wright and Joel Swatton their best.
The Bulldogs have now won three in a row, while the loss leaves South Bendigo as the most vulnerable side in the top five. The Bloods are now just half-a-game clear of sixth-placed Gisborne.
* Gisborne survived a massive scare from bottom side Kangaroo Flat to win by 17 points at Beck Legal Oval.
The Roos led for most of the game, but a six-goal to one last quarter from Gisborne propelled the Bulldogs to a much-needed 15.13 (103) to 12.14 (86) victory.
Gisborne's best were captain Casey Summerfield, Harrison Huntley (three goals) and reigning Michelsen medallist Scott Walsh.
Coach Tyrone Downie, Mat Wiegard and Jack Bowyer (four goals) played well for the Roos.
* Strathfieldsaye is back on top of the ladder after a 32-point win over Eaglehawk at Flight Centre Park.
The Storm booted seven goals to two after half-time to win 13.13 (91) to 8.11 (59) to take the spot of the Hawks at the top.
Matthew Ladson, Shaun Everington and Lachlan Bonney led the better players for the Storm, while Lachlan Sharp kicked four goals.
Josh Ketterer, Kevin Archbold and Tim Hill played well for the Hawks. Matt Gretgrix kicked three goals.
* Sandhurst won its fifth game in a row, defeating Castlemaine by 56 points at Camp Reserve.
After an even first term, the Dragons kicked away to win 17.14 (116) to 9.6 (60).
Codie Price, Blair Holmes and Jake Ward were the standouts for the Dragons, who had Tom McCarthy and Joel Wharton kick three goals each.
Josh Gribben, Rhys Ford (five goals) and James O'Brien battled hard for the Magpies.
HDFL:
Huntly 10.7 (67) d Colbinabbin 6.10 (46). Hawks' seven goals to three during the second and third terms proved crucial. Grasshoppers now out of the top five.
Heathcote 17.14 (116) d White Hills 10.17 (77). Saints got away to a good start, leading by 26 points at quarter-time. The Saints are now a game inside the top five with one round to play.
LBU 27.16 (178) d Elmore 4.7 (31). Third win in a row by more than 100 points for the Cats, who were already 90 points up at half-time. Jarrod Bacon seven goals for the Cats. Meanwhile, it was announced after the game that Adrian Dohnt will be taking over as Cats coach next season from Kahl Oliver, who is stepping down.
Mount Pleasant 16.14 (110) d Leitchville-Gunbower 13.13 (91). This is why the Blues have been so frustrating this year. Lose to the bottom side last week, beat a side in the top five today.
LVFL:
YCW 20.20 (140) d Inglewood 14.5 (89). Eagles win third game of the season, while Inglewood claim another wooden spoon. The Blues had led by one point at half-time. Daine Lowry kicked 10 goals for YCW.
Bridgewater 16.15 (111) d Newbridge 10.12 (72). Maroons fought the game out well after trailing by 46 points at quarter-time. Alex Collins five goals for Bridgewater.
Marong 16.9 (105) d Mitiamo 13.14 (92). Superoos kicked seven goals to two in last term after trailing by 45 points at three quarter-time to cut final margin to 13 points. David Blume seven goals for Marong, William Spicer seven goals for Mitiamo.
BL-Serpentine 15.28 (118) d Calivil United 5.8 (38). An 80-point win to round out the home and away season for minor premier Bears.
NCFL:
Donald 22.9 (141) d Boort 13.18 (96). Lucas Anderson booted 11 goals for the Royals, who had trailed by 20 points at half-time.
Charlton 16.20 (116) d Birchip-Watchem 7.2 (44). Game was over at quarter-time when the Navy Blues led by 51 points. Joseph McGrath five goals for the winners.
Wedderburn 18.10 (118) d Wycheproof-Narraport 11.13 (79). Redbacks recovered from a 16-point half-time deficit. They booted nine goals to nil in the third quarter. Brady Herdman six goals for Wedderburn.
MCDFL:
Avoca 15.12 (102) d Dunolly 5.10 (40). Scores had been level at half-time. Bulldogs kicked nine goals to one in third term.
Talbot 10.19 (79) d Maldon 10.9 (69). They were inaccurate, but the 10-point win keeps the Hawks' finals hopes alive.
Natte Bealiba 9.11 (65) d Lexton 6.3 (39). Swans set the win up with five goals to none in the second term to open up a 32-point lead at half-time.
Carisbrook 9.9 (63) d Navarre 5.6 (36). Redbacks kicked three goals to none in final term after leading by just five points at three quarter-time. They remain undefeated.
