The Bendigo mother said she saw the camel run down Hargreaves Street.
“It then turned down Chapel Street and headed to Bridge Street,” Mrs Oliver said.
“I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen.”
Mrs Oliver said she decided to follow the camel and see where it was going.
“We were driving behind a man who was trying to catch it,” she said.
“His hand was out of the car trying to get it, but that wasn’t working so he decided to abandon his car.
“He then ran faster than Usain Bolt to try and catch the camel.
“I was with a girlfriend and we were laughing uncontrollably the whole time.”
Mrs Oliver said she wasn’t sure anyone would believe what she had just witnessed so she got out her iPhone and started taking photos of the wandering camel.
“It wasn’t something you would see every day,” she said.
“I didn’t think my kids would believe me so I had to take some photos.”
Bendigo Advertiser journalist Dawn Rasmussen and photographer Brian Semmens also got a glimpse of the camel.
Ms Rasmussen said the camel was galloping quite fast down the street.
She said two men were trying to calm down the clearly nervous animal.
Wednesday’s incident put Bendigo in the spotlight, attracting the attention of several metropolitan media outlets.
Social media was also abuzz after the rogue camel broke out of its White Hills backyard.
