Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan said several centimetres of snow fell across the region.
Large snowfalls were also experienced through Eganstown, Kingston, Trentham and Ballarat.
Mr Ryan said the snow occurred between 600 and 700 metres above sea level.
“On Saturday there was cold air mass and winds that were westerly,” he said.
“The day was set up for snow.”
Mr Ryan said a cold strip across the state caused the temperature to drop dramatically.
“Along with the snow there was showers across the region,” he said.
He said it wasn’t unusual to see snow fall in the region.
“Snow would usually fall in this area once a year.
“Throughout the drought years there might not have been the snowfall but in the last couple of years there has been snow.”
Mr Ryan said that despite the chilly weather, he expected the temperature to rise over the next couple of days.
“Over the weekend we did have reports of temperatures of 1 to 2 degrees in the region,” he said.
“The Grampians had a low of zero.
“It was also Melbourne’s coldest July day in six years.”
For Bendigo, Saturday’s maximum reached just 8.9 degrees.
Yesterday the temperature at 9am was 2.8 degrees, the lowest temperature recorded this month at that time.
The temperature at 3pm topped 6.6 degrees, also the lowest temperature recorded this month at that time.
Monday the temperature is set to reach 12 degrees with a few morning showers.
Tuesday it will reach 14 degrees with south-westerly winds of up to 20km/h.
