The Rochester man ran over a give-way sign at the corner of Nolan Street and Bridge Street about 4am.
His car skidded through the intersection and hit a tree before coming to a halt about 100m down the road.
Nearby residents described the crash as an "almighty bang" and said it was lucky the man avoided the parked cars in the street.
According to one woman, who was staying in a holiday house on Bridge Street, the car made a huge roar before skidding to an abrupt halt.
"I came out and the car had clipped a tree and spun around and was facing the wrong way on the road," she said.
The man was uninjured in the incident.
A preliminary breath test showed the driver – who has a learners permit – had a blood alcohol reading of 0.06.
He was fined and his learner's permit was cancelled.
