Horsham foursome triumphs in Bendigo Country Week Bowls final

THE Merv Dean-skipped quartet from Horsham mastered the gutsy conditions to win last night’s fours final at the Bendigo Bank Country Week Bowls.

Horsham’s foursome of Rob Moris, Bob Dolan, John Sudholz and Merv Dean took on the Bendigo “Dream Team” of Graham Martins, Ian DeAraugo, John Beecham and skipper Arthur Kendall.

On a day and night where bowlers played through the rain, wind and cold, Dean’s team led 6-5 after the final bowl in the five-end final.

In the semi-finals, Kendall scored a 6-3 win against Nipper Machlan from Numurkah.

Dean won a great battle with Belmont’s John Shell, 4-3.

Quarter-final results – Nipper Machlan (Numurkah Golf) d Des McNulty (Benalla) 9-0; Arthur Kendall (Bendigo) d  Mick Harrison (Apollo Bay) 8-2; Neville Curtis (Sebastapol) lt Merv Dean (Horsham City) 1-6; John Shell (Belmont) d Chris Jolly (Lancefield) 6-4.

The APIA Pot of Gold award for best single game in the fours went to the Benalla team of Eugene Hodson, Brian McNutt, Peter Merkel, Des McNulty (s) after it scored a 38-2 win in a round game.
