Set your creativity free, community urged

COMMUNITY members are being called upon to come up with a name for the new theatre at the Old Bendigo Gaol site.

City of Greater Bendigo councillor Rod Fyffe said the public had the chance to create a piece of history by submitting their ideas.

He said giving people the opportunity to come up with their own name for the theatre created community involvement in the project. “We want the public to own this theatre and one way of doing this is putting forward a name for the theatre,” Cr Fyffe said.

“It is a community theatre, it is for the community and we want to see the community name it.”

Cr Fyffe said the site was a Bendigo icon and its history should be taken into account when coming up with name ideas.

The theatre is part of a $25.8 million community project that will also include the construction of music, dance and drama studio spaces, a commercial learning kitchen and general learning areas.

The learning areas will be used by students at Bendigo Senior Secondary College and school principal Dale Pearce said the theatre needed a name.

Mr Pearce said the students, staff and members of the school community were being urged to submit their ideas to name the site. He said the theatre, once completed would service people from across Central Victoria and people should consider this when brainstorming ideas.

People wishing to submit a name for the new theatre have until April 29 and can do so online at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/nameourtheatre, by email to nameourtheatre@bendigo.vic.gov or by post to Name Our Theatre, PO Box 733, Bendigo 3552.– MADDIE WINE
