Police are yet to interview a western Victorian man over the double murder of his father and uncle at a sheep farm on Thursday night.
Ross Streeter, 30, is still in Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life-threatening, self-inflicted wounds under police guard and has not yet been spoken to by Homicide Squad detectives.
The Bendigo man was arrested after he was found injured just metres from his father’s Cambridge Street, Avoca, house about midday on Saturday.
He was being taken to Ballarat Base Hospital for treatment when the ambulance was diverted to Melbourne under police escort.
Police were also with Streeter in the ambulance.
Streeter is believed to have helped his father and uncle on the Streeter Street sheep farm on a regular basis.
According to his Facebook page, he completed his education in Maryborough, Queensland, and has a young daughter.
Adam Cooper, who is Avoca’s Victoria Hotel’s bottleshop and bar manager, said Streeter used to come in most Saturdays with his dad.
“They were a straight up and down family,” Mr Cooper said.
“Everyone who comes in is talking about it. It’s just a bit eerie at the moment. It’s like we’re in a movie.”
Mr Cooper said he played in a junior football premiership with Streeter, who he described as a friend.
SES volunteers assisted police on Saturday with a search of a recycling plant in Piper Lane, East Bendigo, after John Streeter’s wallet was found there on Friday.
Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon told Fairfax Regional Media it was an “extremely lucky break” an employee at the plant had found the wallet.
“He found the wallet and was in the process of trying to track the person down when he recognised the address on the driver’s licence and had heard the news,” he said.
The wallet was believed to have been taken from the victim after the murder and dumped in a bin somewhere between the crime scene and the Bendigo area, Detective Solomon said.
He said there were still no clues as to any motive behind the killings.
Doug and John Streeter were found at the family’s sheep farm about 6pm by Douglas’ wife Helen after he failed to return to their Avoca home.
Both men, aged 67 and 69, had gunshot wounds.
Investigators are still appealing for witnesses to Thursday’s double murder.
Detectives would like to speak to anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour while travelling along the Moonambel-Natte Yallock Road and Moyreisk-Natte Yallock Road between 8am and 12pm Thursday.
