Bendigo police disgusted at late night behaviour

BENDIGO police say they are “disgusted” with the behaviour of drunks in the CBD.

Sergeant Steve Rainey said 12 people were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning with 11 of those people receiving penalty notices.

“The arrests were for being drunk, fighting, failing to comply with police requests to move – they were all alcohol related,” he said.

“We were disgusted.

“We just didn’t stop, we were very busy.

“A lot of people were given an opportunity but just didn’t adhere to police instructions.

“If police tell you to move on, you move on.”

Sergeant Rainey said most people were well-behaved but it was a minority who ruined it for everyone else.

“Overall we’re not having a huge problem – Saturday night was just out of the blue.

“But, generally, of late it’s been very, very good.

“But getting people showing no respect for the public, security or the police, is not on and we’re not going to tolerate it.”

Sergeant Rainey said police had also been out and about with a drug dog at the weekend.

“We had a mini operation on Friday night,” he said.

“There were a couple of people arrested in relation to drug offences and a number of indications for the dogs so we were fairly busy.”
