Hargreaves Mall dragon named FunLoong

ICONIC Bendigo dragon Sun Loong has inspired entrants in the Hargreaves Mall red dragon naming competition.

The new playspace dragon will be named FunLoong.

Five different entrants to the competition came up with the name, including five-year-old Mia Williams, 10-year-old Caitlin Buchan, 16-year-old Zoe Willis and adults Andrew Chittenden and Elizabeth Parry.

Caitlin said the Bendigo Easter parade inspired her.

“I just came home from school one day and thought it was a good name, just like Sun Loong the dragon at the museum,” she said.

While Andrew said he wanted something that was quintessential Bendigo.

“A playground is designed to be fun, so my entry was a play on the name of iconic Bendigo dragon Sun Loong,” he said.

Bendigo mayor Lisa Ruffell thanked everyone who got involved with the competition, which attracted 198 entries.

“FunLoong was the most popular entry, but the response was overwhelming and there were some outstanding suggestions,” she said.

“A panel including myself and the CBD Activation Group agreed FunLoong was a great name that suited the idea of the dragon play space being a fun attraction for children visiting Hargreaves Mall.”
