Glamorous ladies and gents will have the chance to win more than $9000 of prizes, including accommodation, gift vouchers and a Catanach Jeweller’s sterling silver necklace made especially for the event.
Golden Mile Fashions on the Field organiser and former face of the Bendigo Cup carnival Penny Holloway said with hotter autumn temperatures expected on Saturday, people should consider lighter fabrics in new trend colours.
“I will certainly be looking for something out of the ordinary – it will be nice to see someone take this upcoming seasons trends such as lace, deeper colours, leather and modern shapes,” she said.
“But also put a traditional twist on the outfit by taking into account the traditional rules of race wear such as longer hemlines, the need for a hat, and proper accessorising,” she said.
Ms Holloway said fashion was for everyone, even those who didn’t normally dress up.
“Fashion reflects our personality and I think it’s nice for country racing to have a bit of glamour,’’ she said.
“You see it in the metro cities all the time but it’s rare for country people to dress up to this extent, with hats and gloves – I guess racing is one of the only times when it is acceptable to that level. We should make the most of it and we have girls who travel from smaller towns just to be part of it.”
She said people didn’t have to travel far to find a classic outfit.
“We need to support our local stores who go to huge efforts to source clothing from all over the globe so that we can gave variety and choice at our fingertips,” she said.
First prize for Lady and Gent of the day; sterling silver necklace valued at $1200 (women), $1000 gift voucher for Tolley Menswear (men), one night’s accommodation at the Crown Promenade Hotel, a gift voucher for Jools for Jim, six bottles of wine, among other things.
The categories will be judged by Jess Pawsey from The Styling Bird, Danica Erard from Danica Erard Millinery and Tony Cavanaugh of Tolley Menswear.
The competition is free to enter and open to anyone over 16 years. Registration opens at 11am on the day and closes at 1pm. A fashion parade, by The Styling Bird, will be held at 1.10am, with Fashions on the Field starting at 1.30pm.
