Marketplace security guard assaulted during theft

A security guard was assaulted at the Bendigo Marketplace on Friday night after trying to detain two alleged shoplifters.

Sergeant Greg Gentry said the incident happened outside the Woolworths supermarket about 7.15pm.

“A male and female went into Safeway and stole some meat,” he said. “They were stopped by a loss prevention officer.

“An unknown teenager, who might have been related to the other two, has intervened and pushed him into a glass window, causing that to smash.”

Sergeant Gentry said the officer, a 51-year-old man, received minor cuts to his neck and face and was taken to Bendigo Hospital for treatment.

He said the three offenders fled the scene and had not been identified.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
