Bendigo Marketplace security guard assualted

A security guard was assaulted at the Bendigo Marketplace last night after trying to detain two alleged shoplifters.

Sergeant Greg Gentry said the incident occurred outside the Woolworths supermarket about 7.15pm.

"A male and female went into Safeway and stole some meat," he said.

"They were stopped by a loss prevention officer.

"An unknown teenager, who might have been related to other two, has intervened and pushed him into a glass window causing that to smash."

Sergeant Gentry said the officer, a 51-year-old man, received minor cuts to his neck and face and was taken to Bendigo Hospital for treatment.

He said the three offenders fled the scene and had not been identified yet.

"The Marketplace has very good video footage and that will be reviewed and I'm sure that will identify them," he said.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
