POWERCOR has confirmed the cause of more than 1200 residents losing power was due to a tree falling onto a power pole in Holmes Road, North Bendigo.
The incident, at about 8.30am, is suspected to have caused a power surge and affected houses in California Gully, Long Gully, Maiden Gully and North and West Bendigo.
A Powercor spokesman said most customers were back on line with about 400 people still waiting for their power to be restored.
Bendigo resident Stephen Stingel sent the Bendigo Advertiser a photo of the fallen tree.
He said he heard two loud bangs as the tree crashed down.

"I live just near where it happened and I spoke to someone who said apparently there was a bit of a fire ball."
