Eaglehawk CFA firefighters were called out at 2.15pm and found the burning vehicle in a ditch in the quarry behind Growler Street.
CFA Eaglehawk firefighter Doug Murley said the car was abandoned when they arrived.
“For whatever reason they’ve done it, they’ve run away pretty quick,” he said.
Sergeant Jason Hawke said the car was unidentifiable after the blaze.
“We couldn’t identify the vehicle. It was so badly burnt we don’t know what vehicle it is or registration numbers. We will continue to investigate it.”
Meanwhile, police are calling for witnesses after a stolen car was found burnt out in Elys Lane, Harcourt.
Firefighters were called early yesterday after the burning car started a small grass fire.
Senior Constable Mark White from Castlemaine police said the Kia Carnival was stolen from Carole Street in Castlemaine.
“We believe it was taken sometime between 1am and 4pm,” he said.
“It’s been completely destroyed. The number plates are not on the vehicle so we believe the offender may have them on another vehicle.”
Anyone with information on either incident should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.?
