Police were last night piecing together the events that led to a fatality on the Calder Highway near Gisborne.
It is believed a man aged in his late teens exited a moving vehicle about 6pm, but investigators were still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the young man died at the scene.
Mr Mullen said MICA paramedics were called to the scene at 5.55pm and tried to resuscitate the man, but were unable to do so.
The fatality brings the provisional road toll to 40, and continues a horror few days on Victoria's country roads.
Seven people have died on country roads since Thursday.
These include a 75-year-old Dunolly man who died in a two car collision on the Maryborough-Dunolly Road at Bet Bet on Thursday.
