University of Third Age seeks new home

UNIVERSITY of the Third Age Bendigo is seeking a permanent home.

U3A is a network of voluntary groups that provides education to older people.

The group meets at the Golden Square Uniting Church, but City of Greater Bendigo community wellbeing director Pauline Gordon said the group had approached the council seeking help to find a new base.

“I’ve been doing some work with them since I started and we’ve been looking at a range of different site options and potential shared models of use,” Ms Gordon said.

“It’s about how we ensure we provide those facilities that support social inclusion.

“I think that’s really important.”

Mr Gordon said the group had been growing in popularity.

“Their numbers are just increasing each week,” she said.

Ms Gordon raised the idea with Federal Minister for Mental Health, Ageing, Social Inclusion, Housing and Homelessness Mark Butler yesterday.

She also raised concerns about the facilities and support in place for elderly residents and their families and said demand for services was exceeding supply.
