Today, the people of Bendigo are being invited to do just that and have their say on the name for the city’s new centrepiece – the Hargreaves Mall playground.
The City of Greater Bendigo last year let the children of Bendigo decide what they wanted to play on, and the red dragon got the vote.
Now, they’re being called on to name it.
The idea of ownership has merit – if the youngsters feel they have played a role in bringing back a play space to the Mall, they will want to be part of it.
But we can only hope their parents continue to have reason to visit the Mall.
Toyworld has relocated to a more convenient location for parents of young children, where parking is easier and the environment less intimidating.
Few parents at present will take little ones into the Mall without good reason, but the play space may turn that around.
This could be the beginning of a new energy in the Mall – and it could be you who has the honour of naming the creation responsible for that.
