Job-seeker Midge Holman took his sign to the people yesterday, walking along High Street between Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat.

He said he had covered about five kilometres over the course of the day and was “chuffed” by the response of people stopping to offer him odd jobs.

“I thought I would try something different with the sign,” he said.

“It’s been great. One lady has asked me to clean her gutters, another man stopped in his truck to say he might have work later in the week.

“Others pulled over to offer money and food.”

Mr Holman – who has worked as a plasterer and labourer for 30 years – said it had been extremely tough to find work recently.

“I’ve been a plaster hanger, I’ll sweep gutters, clean dunnies. I’ll do anything, I just love labouring work,” he said.

Bendigo job recruitment agency Drake International team leader Lucinda Gamboni said there had been a spike in more qualified people looking for work.

“There’s been quite a lot of large organisations that have closed down over the past 12 months,” she said.

“It’s created a tougher market, because it puts people against more skilled and experienced staff that are also looking for work.” Mr Holman can be spotted walking on High Street again today, or can be contacted on 0411 378 249. ?
