While it is trying to shut down local swimming pools, claiming no money for maintenance, it is about to wreck a profitable and well-used venue and spend mega bucks to turn it into an aquatic centre.
I am talking about the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre. This venue is well used in its present form and must surely be profitable. Shows featuring antiques and collectables held by various groups at the centre attract traders and visitors from all over Australia. While here, these people spend money in Bendigo.
If this venue is destroyed there is nowhere in Bendigo to replace it. It is a suitable size, has a kitchen for catering, car parking, is easy for visitors to find and most importantly, is suitable in regards to security. It also has a nearby open space, which can be utilised for outdoor displays.
With its accessible, central location, Bendigo is ideally placed to host events which attract tourists – so why are we trying to kill them off?
With a few new faces in council, perhaps it’s time for them to have a good hard look at this act of stupidity.
