Mueck made a bright start to be two-under par through five holes of the Forest Resort course.
But three-straight bogeys saw him slump to one-over par. He mixed birdies at 10 and 11 with a bogey at the 12th to be even-par going into his final six holes.
Mueck charged home with birdies at the 13th, 16th and 18th to finish at three-under par.
He’s three shots behind amateur Nathan Holman, who fired a brilliant six-under par 66.
Bendigo’s Andrew Martin is nine shots off the lead after opening with a three-over par round of 75.
Martin had one double bogey, three bogeys and two birdies to be tied for 54th.
